Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and can present with joint pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving. Osteoarthritis involves degradation of the normally smooth articular surface of a joint. It can give rise to bony enlargement, deformity, and instability. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the weight bearing joints (base of the big toe, knees, hips, lower back, neck) and the hands. Osteoarthritis can be diagnosed by physical examination and by imaging (X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI, and CT).
Symptoms
Early symptoms of osteoarthritis might include joint stiffness, pain with use, bony enlargement, and swelling. Any of these symptoms merit evaluation by a rheumatologist, and relief can be offered! With available treatments, suffering is not necessary.
Causes
The causes of osteoarthritis are diverse and often caused by many co-existing conditions. Usually, osteoarthritis is due to "wear and tear", and past trauma to a joint might predispose the individual to get early osteoarthritis in that joint. Genetics undoubtedly plays a part in the development of some afflicted individuals.
Treatment
Management of Osteoarthritis includes an individualized exercise program guided by a physical therapist, maintenance of a normal body mass index, and braces and orthosis as needed. Oral and topical NSAIDs can provide relief, as can intra-articular joint or hyaluronic injections. Complementary and alternative remedies also might prove beneficial.
