Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is low bone density which predisposes the individual to fracture. This disease is often silent until late in the disease course – after a fracture. It is important for all individuals with risk factors to be screened with a Bone Density Test (DEXA) to determine if they have Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can occur in both men and women.
Risk Factors:
- Old age
- Steroid use
- Tobacco use
- Family history
- Low calcium intake
- Heavy alcohol use
- Over replaced thyroid
- Anti-estrogen and anti-testosterone treatment
- Lactose intolerance
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Anorexia
- Low vitamin D
- Low body weight
- Early menopause
Treatment
Treatment of osteoporosis includes maintenance of satisfactory daily calcium and vitamin D intake, weight-bearing exercise, avoidance of modifiable risk factors, and medications as needed. There are many available treatments including pills, shots, and IVs. Your individualized treatment plan is custom-designed based on many factors including history of fracture, DXA T score, underlying medical conditions, and other factors. Once on treatment, the patient’s response is monitored with repeat DXA tests every two years and regular blood tests.
