Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis of unknown cause that affects 1% of the population. Although the cause is unknown, it is thought to involve multiple genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors. RA typically involves small joints on both sides of the body and usually has a slow insidious onset. However, on occasion, it can affect only one joint and sometimes start suddenly. RA can start at any age – infancy to 90+ year olds. RA is a systemic disease and can involve more than just the joints – including the skin, heart, lungs, eyes, and blood.
Symptoms
The symptoms of RA are joint stiffness and swelling that interfere with activities of daily living. Grip strength is compromised and swelling in the wrist can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Many joints can be affected by RA – most commonly the hands, wrists, feet, ankles, wrists, elbows, and knees.
Diagnosis & Treatment
It is very important for patients with suspected RA to be referred to a rheumatologist for prompt diagnosis. There are highly effective treatments available for RA to prevent permanent joint damage. It is important to diagnose and treat without delay. There is a wide variety of available treatments, and a custom-designed treatment plan is individualized for each patient. With close monitoring of labs and response to treatment, these medicines are highly safe and effective.
